OFFSHORE

Offshore structures have to be protected against corrosion with an increased safe coefficient. Especially in the case of aluminium anodes, a variety of formulations have been developed in order to cope with the different design parameters and special factors effecting each offshore application. EPE has developed a special range of alloys and POLCOR anode types to fit most of the applications. All the alloy types are based on the well-established Al Zn In alloy. However, special formulations can be followed upon request.

All PL842 series are characterized by the use of high purity primary Aluminium alloy in order to establish that the concentration of residual elements is low enough in order not to affect the anode performance. Ultra pure alloys may be manufactured to meet customers' specification. The addition of elements like Bismuth, Gallium and Manganese can further enhance the depassivating action of Indium and improve the dissolution pattern of the anode.

For example PL842Bi is particularly suitable for buried pipelines, piled structures. PL842G is a general-purpose alloy, well recognized from the offshore industry, suitable for all seawater applications.

The Zinc alloy type is the well-established formulation based on US MIL 18001-K specification and it is suitable for general seawater applications. Its low electrochemical capacity makes it suitable mainly for coated structure were the current demand is significantly reduced. It has excellent performance in low resistance water or saline mud but its application is limited at the temperature range below 60oC
